Makeup Tips
Make-up is as much a part of a women’s everyday life as her perfume, and like choosing the right perfume, it is important to use the right technique with your makeup. It isn’t there to make you look different, it’s for bringing out the beauty you already have and making the most of the make up and cosmetic accessories you have at home. Here are a few makeup tricks to stop you looking like you have just strolled out the circus.
Foundation
Foundation is probably the most essential cosmetic, it protects your skin from sun, wind and pollutants; these are things we come into contact with a day-to-day basis. Foundation can be one of the most frustrating things to apply; its never the right colour, it can highlight the problems your trying to cover in the first place, the biggest problem is women paste it on like icing on a cake.
The first rule in applying foundation is choosing the right shade for you, choose one that is 2-3 shades of a colour that is close to your natural skin tone, remember foundation isn’t meant to add colour to your skin, this is done with eye-shadow, lipstick or bronzer.
A sponge is great to give you a light, sheer layer of foundation. It makes the foundation very easy to blend, and is a necessity for foundation as it helps keep your fingers clean too.
Try a PVA Sponge; they are anti-bacterial and super absorbent so you won’t get that greasy look, it will also help create a nice even finish.
Top Makeup Tip - To get the right colour foundation apply a little to the reverse side of your palm, if it gels with the skin, it means that that shade is suitable for your skin.
Blusher
Blusher is a fast beauty tip; it contours the cheekbones, exaggerates the hollow and creates a warm healthy glow for your skin. Choosing the right colour is very important as is the brush you use to apply it, you want a blush that looks natural and doesn’t stand out, just a hint of colour.
Lightly tap the blusher with the tips of the brush, making sure to shake of any excess. If you just want a natural glow smile and gently tap on the apples of your cheeks, if you want to define your cheekbones an upward sweep towards your temples will dramatize the look.
Top Makeup Tip - To contour your face, apply the blusher underneath your cheeks, this will create what looks like a shadow, which will really bring out your cheekbones.
Lip colour
Lipstick is great for polishing off a look and brightening up your face. But it can be frustrating; it wears off too quickly and gets on your teeth, not a good look. Here are a few makeup hints to prevent this from happening:
- Use a base of lip balm before to even out all the cracks giving you an even finish.
- Using a lip liner all over the lips will help the lipstick fix and stopping it from fading
- To avoid having lipstick on your teeth, run your index finger through the middle of your lips and pull it back out, the excess lipstick will then come out on your fingers and not your teeth.
Selecting the right lip colour
If you have dark skin you have the greatest flexibility: Plums, chocolates, reds, pastels and oranges all work with your skin.
If you have a medium skin tone with golden undertones, all shades of red are for you. Brown-based mauve, sheer berry or spicy brown will also look great.
If you have pale skin, stick to nudes, beige tones, light corals and light pinks. Sheer formulations will probably be most flattering on you.
Top Makeup Tip - Before applying lipstick use a toothbrush and scrub them, this will make them smooth ensuring an even surface for applying your lipstick.
Eye shadow
The first rule when applying eye shadow is to draw attention to the eye and not the makeup.
Applying foundation to the eyelids provides a good canvas for blending the eye shadow and making it last longer. Choose a good quality eye shadow applicator this will ensure an even, consistent finish. Its best to use two even three colours of eye shadow, so its not just blocked on but creates a soft gradient.
When applying eye shadow sweep the lightest shade across the entire area, from the lash line to where you want your eye shadow to finish. Apply a medium colour to the lower part of the lid. Use the darkest colour to create depth, apply along the creases and to the outer edge if your eyes are close together or in the inner edge if your eyes are far apart.
Top Makeup Tip - Apply your eye shadow with a wet applicator to intensify the colour.
Eyeliner
Eyeliner gives depth to the lashes and defines the eye. Eyeliner does need to be used sparingly to create a natural eye definition; otherwise you may end up looking like a panda.
Eyeliners come in such a wide variety of colours, but for a classic look opt for blacks, browns or greys.
Pencil eyeliners are the quickest and easiest to apply, a thin line above your natural eyelash looks natural and helps give the illusion of thick lashes. For a more dramatic look, apply to just above your lower lashes, for a wide-eyed look stop in the middle of the lash line, for a sultrier look apply right to the inner corners of your eye.
Liquid eyeliners take a bit more practice and you will need a steady hand to apply. But they are great for ensuring a smooth consistent line. For a dramatic look draw a thin line across the top lashes and draw a small flick to create a cat eye effect. Or for a more natural look dot the eyeliner between the top lashes to create the illusion of thicker lashes.
Top Makeup Tip - To make eyes appear wider, trace the inner rims of eyes with a white pencil or highlight the inner corners with a light shadow.
Mascara
Before applying mascara use eyelash curlers to really open up your eye. Apply the mascara to the root of your lashes, and apply in short jagged movements, this will help separate the lashes and avoid clumps.
Top Makeup Tip -Don’t pump your mascara wand in and out the tube, as this will cause air to get in drying out your mascara quicker
