Things to consider - Plastic Surgery

When someone says the words “Plastic Surgery” it immediately conjures to mind the image of the slightly past-it Hollywood star getting a bit of a nip and tuck to try and turn back the clock, or the young men and women desperate to look more like the fantasy "ideal" imprinted on them by the magazines full of gorgeous models. Because of this, it is easy to forget that there are many reasons for people to have plastic surgery and they tend to be far less "glamorous" then the sort of thing that you see in the magazines and on the TV.

Plastic surgery isn’t just the domain of the has-been star, or the person determined to "perfect" their looks, it is often performed to help people overcome self-esteem issues that have been caused by matters beyond their control, like those who have been born with a birth defect, like a cleft palate, or to perform skin grafts or reconstructive surgery after the removal of cancer, or maybe even to help reduce the appearance of acne scarring or construct a breast that hasn’t for some reason grown naturally. Plastic surgery, whether reconstructive, or cosmetic is basically used to improve the patient’s appearance and confidence to help them gain a more positive self image of themselves and help them with their day-to-day lives.

But plastic surgery isn’t something that should be settled upon without a good deal of thought and advice as there are many reasons that cosmetic surgery could go wrong. After all, it is an operation in the same way as any other medical surgery and therefore carries inherent risks. Even the non-invasive techniques like Fraxel laser treatment, or Botox can sometimes go wrong. It might be worth having a discussion with a beautician to see if it would be possible to use some clever makeup tricks to "hide" the problem instead of resorting to something as serious as cosmetic surgery. Although there are possible complications that can arise from surgery, there are things that you can do to both before and after your surgery to help safeguard as much as you can against your plastic surgery going wrong.

Firstly, do your research, find a plastic surgeon who is well versed in the procedure you wish to have done, where possible, talk to other people who have used your chosen surgeon and see what their thoughts have been. Visit the clinic (as well as any others they might have) before you make your decision to make sure you are happy with the general cleanliness, etc.

Make sure that you talk to your surgeon before the surgery, and that you are clear on expected recovery times, your after-surgery care plan and ensure that you follow it and give yourself the appropriate amount of time to heal. Obviously, there are still sometimes complications that can’t be predicted but in a lot of these cases, when plastic surgery goes wrong, it is important to remember that it may be possible for either your surgeon, or another surgeon to perform reconstructive surgery and minimize the "damage".

If you have been unlucky enough to have complications during your plastic surgery the chances are your already low self-esteem may have taken another knock, and as most plastic surgery requires payment up-front, you may not know how to go about claiming the compensation your feel you deserve for your suffering.

Many personal injury solicitors can help advise if you have a claim or not, and assist you should you decide to pursue your cosmetic surgery compensation claim. But as with all things, making sure you choose the solicitor that is right for you is the first important step.
